In the interests of keeping this board lively, what are your favourite bands? Or if you prefer classical music, favourite composers?

Alright, you asked for it...
Elliot Smith Jack Johnson Ben Harper Soulfly McLusky Chris Isaak Dre Snoop Dogg Eminem John Butler Trio Xavier Rudd Rage Against The Machine The White Stripes Cat Stevens Type O Negative Pearl Jam Godsmack Weddings Parties Anything
That's just what I have on the 'puter and in the car at present, which makes them my current faves. Although I have a high-rotation of different bands and artists, those are a fairly good sample of the stuff I usually listen to.

Naj: Mick Thomas played at my local Folk Fest this year. I'm not all that familiar with his WPA work, but check out Mick Thomas and the Sure thing. It's pretty good stuff! Did you know that Mick produced the Waiff's earliest album? (They were also at the Calgary FF, did a clinic together) (I even found myself d/l'ing guitar tabs for a couple of his tunes) Good on ya, mate! If you're into sortta industrial/gothy stuff (noticed TO-), check out Project Pitchfork. Especially some of their earlier stuff. Other stuff in 'rotation' lately Horace X (funk meets bigband meets danc meets arabic meets reggae meets England) Slainte Mhaht (pr: Slanche va). An Acadian (Nova Scotia) band that's got fast licks, dancable beat, and a piper! The Cure Bentley Rhythym Ace Stan Rogers Bjork The New Pornographers (featuring Niko Case) Captian Tractor Cash (RIP, Man in Black) U2 Voice Industrie Tragicaly Hip Dave Matthews Matt Good And a bunch of mixes my ulty team put together including *Sugar *Billy Bragg *Ani DiFranco *Cake *Kasey Chambers *Wil *Nick Cave *Be Good Tanyas *Tom Waits

yeah, Mick Thomas and the Sure Thing are alright, but I prefer the WPA stuff. And I knew about MT and the Waifs. He's been friends with the girls for years. The album I'm listening to at the moment has one of them joining in for a couple of songs at a concert. I've got a bunch of his tabs too. Check out "Scorn of the Women", "Away Away", "For a Short Time", and "Step In Step Out". Great stuff!
I checked out PP, but couldn't find a resemblance to TON. I tried downloading some samples from each album and it all just sounds like Depeche Mode ripoffs to me.
I also like Cash, DiFranco, Dave Matthews, Nick Cave and Tom Waits. Most of the others I've never heard of... Obviously U2 is one I have, but I've always considered them to a "band-wagon" kinda band. The only song of theirs that I've ever liked was "Numb", and that's the one that every U2 fan hates!

LOL Yeah numb isn't too popular for a lot of u2 fans. Wierd Al did a parody of it once on Canada's Much Music. He came in for a day and did a day of "Al Music." He walked into the middle of the room, sat on a sool, and put on a touque while the guitar starts up. Then he brought a book up into the screen, and started reading, emulating the Edge's vocals: I will not eat green eggs and ham I will not eat them Sam * I am
What Pitchfork stuff did you find? If you can, look for Entity Renascence (especialy the FrontLine Assembly -FLA remix from the Tyrrany Off the Beat album) Steel Rose Requiem Song of the Winds KNKA The Hip are a cornerstone of Canadian Rock. Stan Rogers is a maritine folk singer from Halifax, Canada. Voice Industrie EBM/electronic-industrial band from Edmonton, Canada (well if you thought PP was a DM ripoff, VI 's vocals are identical, but they don't suck ) Captain Tractor is folky-pop from Edmonton. Wil is a guitar-singer-songwriter from Calgary, Canada. Fastest chops I've ever seen live! VI, CT, and Wil are all "indy" artists. Bentley Rhythm Ace is house-style, and features Pop Will Eat Itself's Richard March. I've been searching for the tabs to "Song for the seven seas" by Mick Thomas. You haven't seen them anywhere, have you?

I've seen them shelved there many times. That's probably why I've mentally shoe horned TON in there... OZTABS is pretty good. I've posted a request for 7 Seas there, but nothing's come up yet I just bumped the thread, so who knows, perhaps I'll get luckey... Stan Rogers is an iconoclast of Canadian Maritime (East Coast) folk music. His little diddy, "Barret's Privateers" among others such as "the Idiot" and "Mary Ellen Carter" have earned him a high mark in Canadian folk history. We've got something similar at www.canehdian.com As for the Tragically Hip ( www.thehip.com ) They're Canada's biggest secret. The old stuff rocks hard, the newer stuff is okay too: Blow at high Dough 38 Years Old New Orleans is Sinking Little Bones At the Hundredth Meridian Wheat Kings Fully Completely Courage Fifty-Mission Cap The Wherewithal Fireworks Grace Too So hard done by Ahead by a century Music at Work
