Mieville said: "I'm going to turn my PhD into a book. This is not uncommon. It'll give the completist something to do! So I'm talking to academic publishers". Sounds interesting. Anyone know what he did his PhD on?

Politics was his degree. I think his doctorate was based around political economics ? On Forthcoming books: Note to anyone who want to get a hold of Mievilles "The Tain" novella, it is reprinted in the "Cities" collection. www.sfsite.com/08b/ct158.htm

i seem to recall reading he did his PhD on the philosophical foundations of International Law?
Something like that.
Would fit with his political views.

Published a few months back , but not given much publicity was a short story collection called. " Conjuctions 39.The New Wave Fabulists,"containing a Mieville story,as below. "Familiar," by China MiƩville, imagines a surreal and whimsical fable of a familiar conjured by a witch. Intended to increase and focus his power, the witch soon discovers that the creature, with its feral curiosity, disgusts him. Unable to destroy it, like a kitten in a sack, he tosses it into a river. But the familiar is able to incorporate elements of its surroundings into its corporeal self, growing into a bizarre amalgam of industrial waste, machinery and animals parts as it learns and matures through assimilation. The world is a resource of "infinite tools" which it tirelessly adapts to its use, changing and evolving as knowledge and circumstance allow. Set within modern day London, or a near future wherein magic and reality blur, MiƩville's conceit in some ways becomes a reflection of his own imaginative fiction, a fabrication at once familiar and fanciful. Dead right on the PhD, Cap'n. I suspect the resulting book will be of interest to specialists only (otherwise China would not be talking to academic publishers). One piece of fiction that no one has mentioned here yet is "Foundation", the short story that China had in the London magazine of the Independent newspaper. See www.emcit.com/emcit093.shtml#Short for a short review.

A couple of short pieces to look out for. China has a contribution in the new Steve Jones anthology, The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror. However, it is the same story ("Details") that appeared in the Children of Cthulhu anthology earlier this year.
Also there is a China contribution in the forthcoming, exceedingly hilarious Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric and Discredited Diseases.

The new Emerald City which includes the Lambshead Guide review is now online at: www.emcit.com/emcit097.shtml. The review is probably incomprehensible but as long as it is funny that's OK.

Cheryl
Do you know when it'll be released?
At TORCON China gave a teaser to some of his work in the "Guide" and it was both gruesome and hilarious at the same time...

According to the publicity material that Jeff sent me it is October 21st. Knowing the publishing industry I'd say +/- 7 days on that.
Gruesome and hillarious? Absolutely. Very much so. Often both at the same time.

I'm really looking forward to this book. There are a lot of talented people contributing stories and it sounds like they're having a blast doing it. Vandermeer is the perfect editor for something like this. It's certainly on my to-read list.

Hi - I'm guessing you guys all already heard that China's got a full collection coming out from Del Rey sometime. I doubt a little it'll be '04, but almost certainly '05. It's called THE TAIN AND OTHER STORIES.
