It certainly is. Hugo nominee and thoroughly deserving.
Plus you get a Jerry Cornelius story from Michael Moorcock, and a truly wonderful tale about uppity pensioners from Geoff Ryman. Cities is a superb collection.

I really like Paul Di Filippo's work. I've been reading his short stories for years (and the rare novel) and can't get enough of it. He's quite unique.

Well now, this is what I get for being frugal, isn't it? Scouring Amazon for Mieville hardbacks in the last 3 months has got me several offers for signed PS Publishing hardbacks at the going rate of 50 to 100 pounds (which I desire, deliciously, but cannot afford)....and Amazon.ca has nothing. Now, both chapters and Amazon.ca have Cities on what looks like back order. I'll probably check the next month to see if it pops up on either for shipping within one week or less, as I'm moving soon, and if not, I'll place a back order after the move.
Are there any UK babes in the house? I've got several friends there and was thinking about asking them to check bookstores and whatnot to see if they could wrangle a hardback for me of PSS, The Scar, or The Tain, but wanted to ask a Mieville fan from Jolly Ole to see if there's any regularly on the bookshelves. Yes...I am a hardback junkie. Plus, that cover art is too lush not to have in my hands!

Wolfram, I suggest you try Abebooks www.abebooks.com/. They seem to have most of what you are looking for. But expect to pay through the nose if you want The Tain because there were only 300 hardcovers (and 500 paperpacks) printed. Cities is a much cheaper way to get the story.

I will almost certainly use abebooks to snag a copy of The Scar. There were many copies up for grabs there, and some of the prices rather reasonable for the signed hardback. I think I'll steal PSS off ebay. It's normally up there in fine cond. for the signed hardback at less than $100. The Tain...yes, I've more than resigned myself to spending about $150 for that one. But I've got no choice---I must have the PS hardback! I don't know what it is...I'm almost as much one for the packaging as the material itself. Speaking of packaging...how does everyone like the Iron Council cover art? I found it a bit bland and dissapointing myself. Doesn't convey anything of the wonder of the world of Bas-Lag. I'm hoping for an Edward Miller cover to reveal itself soon. I did love the US Scar cover. I wish they could have had that same artist return. I'm only assuming she didn't, because the IC cover style doesn't look like the Scar at all, IMO.

Yet another IC diddy...
No spoilers here, just conjecture on my part, but does anyone know if the title refers to the same Council we saw in PSS? If so, I fear I may be sorely disappointed, as those parts, along with the handlingers had me unusually bored in what is otherwise a right thrilling book.

Since CM won't refer to it by name, neither will I, but your last post perked my ears!
Where can one check out the artwork for the new book?

It's not the best quality picture, but you can see that there's a train, and everything's swathed in a very dark red. China's batty. He's a major author now, he's going to have to get used to people chatting over book titles and spoiler spec. Price of fame, baby!

Hi all,
I've been lurking for a while and now seemed like a good time to jump in. There had been some discussion over at the Runagate-Rampant Message Board about who was actually publishing Iron Council. In an effort to find out I sent an e-mail to TorUK; in turns out that Macmillan is still the publisher, and they were kind enough to send me a dust jacket type description of the plot.
Personally, I didn't think there were spoilers, but if you want to be completely surprised, I would skip what follows. It's also interesting that they refer to it as The Iron Council when everything else I've seen refers to it without the "The".
Nice to "meet" you.
Jake
1/22/04 P.S. China showed up on the Runagate-Rampant board and asked that I not disseminate the summary any further. Apparently it does, in fact, contain spoilers and he is none too pleased with Macmillan for making it available. At any rate, I apologize for what now seems like a horrible tease of a posting.

Hi all, just came across this page while searching for Iron council info. Thought you would all be interested to know that CM has scrapped the first draught of IC and is now currently in the process of re-writing it. Yeah I was disappointed too

Something weird going on here folks. There's a post from Scabmettler in the "Recent Posts" section that is supposedly in this thread but isn't visible in the thread itself. Database corruption?
Anyway, Scabmettler is passing on a report that China has embarked on a major re-write of The Iron Council. Last I heard from China's editor the book is delivered and is going through the usual edit process but there's no suggestion of scrapping the original draft.

Really weird. The Scabmettler post is there now. Oh well.
Anyway, points stands. No re-write. All is progressing on schedule. At least as far as I can ascertain from the publishers.

Hi guys, have just joined this discussion board - and very cool it is too. I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing China at the Bath Literature festival in England. Can tell you a wee bit more about the Iron Council - here's what he says in the interview: "[Your new book, Iron Council, is out in August. What can fans be expecting from it?
It’s set in the same world as Perdido and Scar, its set about 25 years later and it does involve a return to New Crobuzon. I’m going to be a reading from it tonight actually, which involves a return to New Crobuzon, but also we don’t spend all our time there so it’s kind of both – a cross in between the two.
The link between the Scar (and Perdido) was a small link with one of the characters, essentially one paragraph.
Yeah exactly, and it’s the same with this – it’s a self contained story, you don’t have to have read anything else but if you have, you’ll see certain references, you’ll see certain characters that come through. "
He seems to be keeping alot under wraps, but the impression i got was that it is his most politcal book yet. And he's a very nice man who gave me his beer! Whatta guy!

So, I've read the book. Guess what, it is great. No, you knew that, didn't you. OK, so listen up, this is important. Iron Council is best enjoyed if you know nothing at all about it beforehand (other than having read PSS). Trust me. Don't read reviews. Don't even read the cover blurb. Just dive right in and let China lead you through it. But if you really, really can't wait my review is online here: www.emcit.com/emcit106.shtml#Train
