Hi Greyfing - Quicksilver is just under 1000 pages. But Gary Wolfe says that it is only Part I of a three-part novel to be issued over the space of about a year.
I might add that it is full of jokes about a big, fat book called Cryptonomicon that one of the (17th C) characters is supposed to have written.

so, does anyone think we'll see a return of an aged isaac and company in IC? im guessing not given my impression of CMs approach to world building, although maybe a yag cameo or better is not out of the realms of possibility.... i just keep hoping for some kind of weaver intervention for lin, and just everything being alright .... small chance i reckon, bloody darkness.

SPOILERS -- Mieville is a little over half way done writing the book. He will probably turn in the manuscript by the end of 2003, and they're aiming for a May/June 2004 publication date. -- Mieville read from the 11th Chapter of Iron Council, which takes place about a quarter of the way through the book. Here's a short synopsis of the reading: The scene takes place in a theatre. A weird play is being performed. Orry is the name of the character’s PoV. It is fairly funny, with a riot starting because of the play promoting “heresy” to events that happened 20 years ago. Apparently Jack-half-a-prayer was killed by a pocked man. The play showed the pocked man actually killing Jack in mercy. Some official stops the play. The crowd riots. Some funny stuff, then the scene ends. He read the same passage at TORCON 3/WORLDCON to a standing-room-only crowd. The chapter had me pining for the release of the next book. I had only finished reading Perdido the evening before, and am presently starting in on the Scar. A little more info about the "pocked man" in the puppet show had him with bound feet and face...

Well, I doubt it will happen, but what I'd really like to see is more Uther Doul. Just from the anecdotes he tells in Scar, I think there could be a few decent stories about his exploits. At the very least, I would love to read a novel about his youth in High Cromlech. Unfortunately, I doubt CM is the type to start an action-hero series, however much potential a character has.

I think Locus has incorrect info. As far as I know, the Brit & US version will be simul released in July 04. The US release date will be July 27th. China will be touring for us in the US, kicking off his tour at San Diego Comic Con.

more news: "For those of you fortunate enough to have gotten a hold of the limited UK printing of THE TAIN, you are worthy of my envy. Those of us in the US, however, will have to look forward to a forthcoming Del Rey collection of Mieville's short fiction, in which THE TAIN will feature prominently. Also included will be at least one original short story. While the release-date for this book has not yet been determined, IRON COUNCIL—Mieville's newest effort involving a hijacked locomotive and gothic gunslingers in Bas Lag—will be on shelves in July of 2004."

That's good news. I'll have to make sure I order a small pile of those for my store.
Speaking of which, THE TAIN will also be included in the US release of Peter Crowther's CITIES anthology. It will be published in 2004 by Four Walls Eight Windows. I don't think you'll find it on their web site, but my distributor had it listed and I confirmed it with Peter. Already placed the order for this one.

Wolfram, that's $30 CDN. Remember there's a 30%-35% exchange rate on the green-back. In some places, I've seen the exchange as much as 40%-45%... For example, the Scar lists on amazon.ca for $28.95 CDN (msrp), whereas amazon.com lists it for $18.95 USD (msrp). So that $30 is actually $20 (assuming you're from the USA)... It sucks when you're from my side of the boarder

or you can wait a few months and get the US release which will list for $17. You'll easily pay less since most places discount their books to somewhere between $11 and $13.

Wolfram: I'm told that Di Fillipo's novella "A Year In Linear City", also contained in Cities, is excellent.
