So what's with Uther Doul? Anyone have any ideas? What was his motivation throughout the book? Why was he manipulating Bellis?
Also, how do you pronounce Doul? Is it like "duel"? When everyone was chanting when he fought, were they saying "Duel! Duel!"? That could have been confusing for those not in the know.

I think the only idea about Doul is that one shouldn't think too much about what he was doing - or why. He is presented outside as a force rather than just a man. A mystery he is, and as such he should remain. Otherwise, one could lose interest in him very rapidly.
Some things are meant to remain hidden. Doul is one such thing.

I'm going to go look in the Scar again, but before I do...does anyone here know where the description of Doul's appearance is? I REALLY want to draw him, but I can't quite remember the details...

Isn't he a kind of leather-bound, mercinary type with cropped grey hair? I believe he is supposed to be much older than he looks and has wires weaving around one arm which attach to a sword and channel "possibility energy". Could be wrong though, buddy.

I thought the wires led to a powerpack for the sword too.
Was he pale skinned as well? Because he comes from the necrocracy of High Cromlech?

I believe he had some sort of conductive pad or points on his hand/palm (?) (leading, yes, to a sort of energy pack at his belt) which contacted his possibility sword at the hilt, thus powering it only in his hands. The wires were woven into the leather of his sleeve.
I would guess that he is pale, but not unnaturally so...I don't recall China ever mentioning a zombie-esque pallor.

On his appearance: I remember a specific mention of his being younger than Bellis (who I believe was over 40), which I assumed put him at 35-37ish. The short-cropped hair is accurate, but in my mind's eye I always envision him with a shaved head (but that's just me thinking he's too much of a badass for hair). As for where in the book his description can be found, I think it starts with Bellis' first glimpse of him aboard the Terpsichoria (when he kills Mysovic), but then details are added as he appears on later occassions such as the scabmettler fight.
On what's up with him: I think of him as being (like Hedrigall and later, Tanner) in a bind of conflicting loyalties. As a soldier, which if I remember right, he claims is what he is when he's arguing with the Bruccolac, he's first and foremost loyal to his commanding officers, the Lovers. As a citizen of Armada, he's loyal to the greater good of the city. To me, the insinuation is that at some point he came to realize that the (female) Lover's hell-bent intention on taking Armada to the Scar was counter to the good of Armada. So, he devised a way (using Bellis, that possibility instrument, etc.) for events to unfold which would save the city, while at the same time not taking any direct actions which would be unloyal to the Lovers. Mi dos centavos...

Re: the baldness: isn't there someone in the book who is bald (and that the rest of that person's description sounded much like China himself)? I thought it was Uther too---but perhaps it's The Brucolac?

That is an interesting idea- which character of the books is most like the author?
