In my opinion The Scar is a far superior novel than PSS. So many scenes stand out in my mind as being truely excellent. I much perfer the setting of Armada to New-Crobuzon.

i second that - I loved the Brucaloc, and the Doul, and i adored the Brucaloc-Doul Fight Scene (or rather the lack of it. I quite liked the way he skipped it)

Agreed. The Scar as a whole worked for me while there were parts in PSS that just bogged the entire book down. I guess you could say that in PSS we got flashes of brilliance and then in The Scar we got the whole deal. The characters were amazingly written, IMO.

I'm finding it difficult to choose between the two ( mainly beacause i love them both ).
I may lean more towards PSS due to the complex nature of NewCrobuzon and the whole diversity of life and politics there.
Although ,I think the writing in "The Scar", was far more tighter.

I am with Pale on this one. I agree that the writing for Scar was a lot more driven, but hey in some ways it was the sheer scale of PSS that I loved, and that "what the...." feeling that was throughout it (my "what the..."'s).
Sure, it bogged down, and at times thecharacters were a bit jerky(not acting as I thought they would) but ingeneral the whole diversity was awesome.
And Issaac and the birdman was excellent, right down to the ending...

They are both good but if you ask me to pick I will still say the Scar as I really dug the whole ocean theme and the sense of freedom. New Crobuzon was very dark and claustrophobic. What did you guys think of the ending of PSS? It seems like a lot of people were disappointed in it (from the Malazan board). Personally, I loved it. The only thing that eclipsed it was the ending of the Scar .

I'd have to go with The Scar as well. PSS was awesome in its own right...but The Scar just brought a whole new level to the world, a sense of freedom and vastness. Damn I love that book!

Id agree that the Scar was better than PSS. Mainly because of the ending, which in PSS was pretty awful, imho... the ending to the Scar was a bit of a let down to, but still much better than PSS. Apart from that, there is no way to separate them... It seems to me he hurries writing his endings, or something, because they have both been the worst written parts of the books

hmmmm...I understand what you are saying, and agree to a point, however I thought that the climax to King Rat was one of the best climaxes I have ever read!!!

I remember China telling me that he spent a lot of time on the ending of The Scar, that he was very pleased with it, but that he suspected a lot of people would not like it.
