Picking up on an idea from the Malazan Forum, do you think (as I do) that PSS would make an excellent film?
And then the inevitable...who plays who?

ah!*Taps nose cunningly* Here are some snippits from various interviews with china:
----- "It does seem to me that there is potential for a celluloid version of Perdido Street Station, but my fear is that it would focus on producing spectacularly gross special effects that would leave any literary intent behind. Has Hollywood come calling about your book, and would you be willing to leave them to their own devices to interpret your work?
MiƩville: I'd be delighted to see films made of my stuff. I actually think my first book, King Rat, is more immediately filmable than Perdido. There's some discussion going on, and I'm open to and excited by all suggestions. Certainly, I'd like a lot of creative input, and I'd feel very protective of my stuff. I love the world I've created, and I'd be pretty gutted if the film screwed it up. But at the same time, you have to remember that it's not your project, and the kind of story you can tell in a two-hour film is very different to that you can tell in a book, so you can't be too poo-faced about it. I have very particular ideas about what would work, filmically, but I'm not dogmatic about it." -----
And who he thinks should play who:
----- "Q. How would you cast Perdido Street Station then?
CM: Hmm...Vermishank would be Martin Landau, I think. Isaac could be LL Cool J in ten years time, with a big bushy beard, doing an English accent. (Right....) Lin? Doesn't really matter, does it? Anyone skinny wearing a rubber bug head. I'm working on the others." ------

Tricky. I'd have to agree with China.
Although, if i had to cast:
Isaac: Robbie Coltane
Voice of the Weaver:John Hurt
Vermishank; Terence Stamp

Well, I'd love to see CM's world on screen, but honestly, I think it might do better as a premium cable series ala "Band of Brothers". Given the success of that series as well as others like it (Dune), I think perhaps more authors and filmmakers should consider such a format. In my opinion this would provide the time necessary to develope the depth present in PSS.
As far as actors, I haven't thought about it much, but I just can't help but feel like Christopher Walken belongs a CM movie.
It doesn't quite fit here, but this seems a better place than any other to mention it. This week a local radio station announced that DJ Hann of Linkin Park has announced he will be making a movie of King Rat. Unfortunately, the disc jockey managed to blow the plot twist to anyone who was listening closely.

I was thinking about the problems a PSS book might present. First off, the obvious problem, it would be on a production scale the size of Lord of the Rings, and in order to remain true to the story would probably have to be twice as long. How does one fix that? Just an idea, but perhaps an animated movie released in four parts. 2 movies for Perdido Street station, 2 movies for The Scar, and then you've told the whole story, right? Then we run into the problem of voice actors...so who's got ideas? Or perhaps recommendations on animators?

Perhaps an ANIME project could do it justice? I kept seeing the moths as not being unlike Worsel from the Lensman movie

Well, perhaps anime, but it would need to be more along the lines of Cowboy Bebop or something more serious than say...Dragon Ball z or Lupin III. I can just see it now...the moths looming over the city, and for a half an hour the camera panning between Isaac and Yagherak, gritting their teeth/beak, waiting for the moths to build up their power levels.

Hmm. When i read the book (in Dutch), i have see that the novel is written in a movie-style. And so, i've been thinking about a movie of it. But i think, that a 2 or 3 hour movie cannot be maked. But, maybe is a short television-serie an better idea. A serie with real people and some (humhum) special effects. Like Jacksons "The lord of the rings". And, i hope to make that serie on a day. Why? Because i see the scenes in me. I see the scene in which Lin turns her head tot the monsters (i don't know how they call in English, we call them "laafmotten"), the huge scene on the roof in which the monsters dies and such more. Greetings, Deweb

Thank you! To give some interesting at this post: I don't think that Robbie Coltrane can play the roll of Isaac. Isaac is in my memory a thin man, but...wel extremly United Kingdom (i think that's the thing the new crobuzon' people call "exentric"). But the man for "Vermishank" is a good choise. Grt. Deweb

The English version had Isaac as rather chubby man.

hmm, maybe i have read over that....but even then i do not think that Coltrane is the right persone. There is a charactar in a comic-serie from Belgium which is mine isaac: home.scarlet.be/~lucdsm/pic/inlbapi.gifMaybe with more fat, but i think that we must seek in this person. Grt. Deweb

Well, as long as Winona Ryder isn't in it. China's is not a great fan of hers heh heh.
I agree Isaac should be played by someone very English and quite crotchety. A Tom Baker type to be sure... Can I be an extra? Can I? Can I? I definately think the people on the forum should get unvited to be the extras!!!

I'm thinking that maybe I should create "A list of things that almost gave me a heart attack" because of this page - www.bluegeckolounge.com/imdb/pss.html Note to readers - see the URL at the bottom of the page.

Heart attack is a slight trauma comparing to this.. Ok, Fishburne fine, Aniston fine, but Kutcher.. no way, punk'd or otherwise. Hate him. Just can't help it. Sure hope that they show very up close when one of the slake moths tears The Rock (as Tansell) in pieces.. Is this movie still in production? Seems like not, because the latest news is almost an year old. Hope they bury it. Mister Director Sir! Slake moths and mummies are not the same thing! If you can't direct, just make special effects, then just stick with what you can do. Let someone else do Movies, while you play with your CGI. Sorry for the yammering. Blood pressure's a bit high.
